AARP Georgia has appointed retired Maj. Gen. Ronald L. Johnson to the Executive Council. Gen. Johnson currently serves as a professor for the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Prior to becoming faculty, Gen. Johnson was the National Basketball Association’s first Senior Vice President of Referee Operations. Before the NBA, he was a decorated serviceman serving as the Deputy Commanding General and the Deputy Chief of Engineers, the second highest-ranking senior engineer staff officer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He retired in 2008 after serving 32 years in the military.

“He is an embodiment of AARP’s motto of ‘To serve, not to be served,’” said AARP Georgia State Director Debra Tyler-Horton. “His experience and career in the military will be invaluable to us as we continue our outreach to veterans.”

In addition to his role as a professor and faculty senate member at Georgia Tech, Gen. Johnson is an advisor to the Board of Engineering Systems, Inc., a board member and the former Secretary of the Board of Directors of Goodwill Industries International, and a National Trustee for Boys & Girls Club of America.

“Our veterans’ initiatives are very important to us, and Ron’s diverse military background and experiences will definitely be an asset to the work we’re doing to connect with this important audience,” said AARP Georgia State President Lee Baker.
