Georgia United Foundation’s School Crashers Program Returns

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Tuesday, March 12th, 2019

Georgia United Credit Union Foundation is now accepting nominations for their 6th Annual School Crashers program. Community residents, educators, students and businesses are encouraged to recommend a Georgia school that would benefit from a facility improvement project. Nominations will be accepted March 1 - March 31, 2019, at gucufoundation.org. The top winner will be announced May 7, 2019.

School improvement projects, also known as “crashes”, are funded by the Georgia United Foundation and are performed by Georgia United Credit Union team members, community partners, sponsors and community volunteers. Nominated schools must be an accredited public or private elementary, middle or high school in the state of Georgia. The school named as the top winner will be chosen based on a compelling 250-word statement explaining why the school deserves a makeover. Supporting photos illustrating the area(s) in need of improvement are strongly encouraged. Project requests for structural, electrical, or plumbing enhancements will not be considered.

The School Crashers program has provided 33 school makeovers totaling over one-million dollars in improvements over the last five years. In 2018, Rock Chapel Elementary School in Lithonia was named as top winner. The school received exterior and interior improvements including landscaping, painting, signage, courtyard STEM garden and custom murals throughout the school. In addition, faculty members received new school logo wear with their redesigned mascot to kick off the school year. Four additional schools were named as runner-up and received school improvement mini-makeovers, known as “mini-crashes”, over the summer. Photos and additional information can be found at gucufoundation.org.
