Gainesville Sees Rise in August Unemployment Rate

Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Thursday that Gainesville recorded an unemployment rate of 2.5 percent in August, up four-tenths of a percent over the month. A year ago, the rate was 2.7 percent.

“As we look toward the fall, we are committed to supporting the workforce as employers search for seasonal, full-time, and part-time employees to fill vacancies in preparation for the holiday employment season,” said Commissioner Mark Butler.

The labor force increased in Gainesville by 177 and ended the month with 105,752. That number rose by 1,518 when compared to August of 2021.

Gainesville finished the month with 103,109 employed residents. That number decreased by 219 over the month and increased by 1,730 when compared to the same time a year ago.

Gainesville ended August with 98,900 jobs, an all-time high. From July to August, job numbers increased by 1,400. When compared to August of 2021, job numbers rose by 3,100.

The number of unemployment claims decreased by 12 percent in Gainesville in August. When compared to last August, claims were down by about 12 percent.

Employ Georgia, the GDOL’s online job listing service at employgeorgia.com showed about 2,040 active job postings in Gainesville for August.
