Georgia Red Cross Responds After Severe Weather Moves Across the State

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Thursday, April 4th, 2024

After damaging storms went through most of Georgia Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, American Red Cross disaster volunteers responded quickly to provide emergency essentials and support for families in need. According to the National Weather Service, a radar-confirmed tornado touched down in Rockdale County. The storm led to power outages, damaged trees and downed power lines. Volunteers from the Greater Atlanta Chapter are out doing damage assessments in Rockdale County and are ready to help residents as they recover from the storm. The Red Cross will provide emergency supplies, assistance and recovery planning to families to meet their disaster-caused needs.

In the days and weeks ahead, the Red Cross will work with residents to help them through their next steps and provide additional recovery resources. All Red Cross disaster assistance is free and made possible through the generosity of the community. People in need of emergency assistance are asked to call 1-800 Red Cross (1-800-733-2767).

After a tornado or severe storm damage:

  • Let friends and family know you’re safe

  • If evacuated, return only when authorities say it is safe to do so

  • Continue listening to local news or a NOAA Weather Radio for updated information and instructions

  • Stay out of damaged buildings

  • Watch out for fallen power lines or broken gas lines and report them to the local utility company immediately.
