Secretary of State's Office Sets Record for Corporate Filings

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Monday, July 17th, 2017

Secretary of State Brian Kemp announced a record-breaking 637,587 annual registrations have been filed in Georgia year-to-date through the office’s Corporations Division. This figure shatters the all-time record, last year’s overall total of 633,298 annual registrations, and business filings are being processed at record speed—an average 2.37 business days from start to finish.

“In the Peach State, it has never been easier or faster to file your business. This is how government should work, and we will continue to streamline our processes for the benefit of all Georgians,” stated Secretary Kemp. “When you slash bureaucracy and implement private sector solutions, you get real results.”

In Georgia, for-profit corporations, non-profit corporations, professional corporations, limited liability companies, and limited partnerships are required to file paperwork for their business with the Secretary of State’s office. The annual registration period for existing businesses opens each year from January 1 to April 1. Throughout the year, however, Georgia’s business-friendly climate attracts entrepreneurs to file new ventures with the office.

In June 2015, Secretary Kemp rolled out a new, state-of-the-art filing platform – eCorp – for businesses through the Corporations Division. As a result, Georgia boasts one of the most user-friendly systems in the nation for filing a new or existing business.

The Corporations Division recently rolled out new features, such as the ability to e-file cable and video franchises and make bulk changes to a company’s registered office address or registered agent’s name. Later this year, several other eCorp features will go live. Businesses will be able to e-file annual registrations in bulk—up to 5,000 at one time. Service agents will also be able to take advantage of a new draw-down account option. Once a service agent emails bulk filings to our office, staff will process payment from the agent’s designated, off-site account and cut out the need for a courier to send over checks with filings.

The annual registration period re-opens on January 1, 2018 through 11:59 p.m. on April 1, 2018 for business entities to file their annual registrations with the Corporations Division.
