The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting Gainesville and surrounding area residents to join the fight to end Alzheimer’s by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The Walk will take place on Saturday, October 6 at Downtown Gainesville Square in Gainesville, Georgia.
Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's participants will complete a two-mile walk and will learn about Alzheimer's disease, advocacy opportunities, clinical studies enrollment and support programs and services from the Alzheimer’s Association. Walk participants also honor those affected by Alzheimer's disease with the poignant Promise Garden ceremony.
"The Walk to End Alzheimer's is a great way for families who are affected by this disease to feel they are not alone”, added Nicole Columbo, chair, Gainesville Walk to End Alzheimer’s. “My participation is in memory of my Grandmother Audrey, who passed due to complications from Alzheimer's disease. My family's involvement with the Walk to End Alzheimer's has served as a healing process. The walk is a great way to honor someone's legacy or support those who are living with the disease."
In addition to the two-mile walk, participants will enjoy family fun activities including face painting and a team spirit t-shirt contest. Walk participants are encouraged to dress in purple to show their dedication to bringing awareness to Alzheimer’s.
More than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease, the sixth-leading cause of death in the U.S. and the only disease among the top 10 causes that cannot be cured, prevented or even slowed. Additionally, more than 16 million family and friends provide care to people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias in the U.S. In Georgia alone, there are more than 140,000 people living with the disease and 527,000 caregivers.
