Emile Risby, M.D., chief medical officer and director of the Division of Hospital Services for the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD), was recognized by the Georgia Psychiatric Physicians Association as the “Psychiatrist of the Year” at the organization’s winter meeting held on February 16.  The statewide organization represents Georgia psychiatrists and their patients.

“We are proud that Dr. Risby’s leadership has been so widely recognized by his peers.  They could not have selected a better person for this prestigious honor,” said DBHDD Commissioner Judy Fitzgerald.  “Dr. Risby’s professionalism, work ethic, and abilities to provide excellent care while solving complex problems make him a tremendous asset to DBHDD and the citizens of Georgia.”

“I am humbled by this recognition,” said Emile Risby, M.D.  “The Georgia Psychiatric Physicians Association is Georgia’s flagship organization for psychiatrists, and I am deeply honored to receive this award from my peers.”  

Dr. Risby joined DBHDD as chief medical officer in August 2011.  His role expanded to include director of hospital services in June 2013.  Prior to joining DBHDD’s staff, he served as clinical director of DBHDD’s Georgia Regional Hospital-Atlanta through a contract with Emory University.  He has also held the role of medical director in numerous departments at Grady Health System, Emory University, and DeKalb County.  He is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in both psychiatry and forensic psychiatry.

Dr. Risby attained the rank of colonel in the United States Army and is retired from the Army Reserve.  He received his medical degree from Meharry Medical College in 1982 and his bachelor’s degree from Tennessee State University.
