Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger this weekend attended the 2019 Democracy Tour, a bipartisan voting rights history tour to key sites in Alabama. The tour, facilitated by the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS), was attended by 19 other Secretaries from across the nation.

“The heroes of the voting rights movement dedicated their lives to ensure a fairer and more just nation for generations of Americans to follow, and every citizen today owes them a great debt for their sacrifice,” said Secretary Raffensperger. “As Georgia’s Secretary of State, I will take up the duty of honoring their memory by continuing their legacy of progress and empowering every voter through fair and accurate elections.”

The bipartisan group of statewide election officials – nine Democrats and 11 Republicans – explored the history of the voting rights movement in Birmingham, Montgomery, and Selma.  Together they visited historic sites, museums, and monuments, and heard firsthand from guests whose lives were personally affected in the Voting Rights Movement and in the struggle to enact the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
