Gainesville Sees Hike in January Unemployment Rate

Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Thursday that Gainesville recorded an unemployment rate of 2.4 percent, up three-tenths of a percent over the month.  A year ago, the rate was 3.3 percent. Despite this, Gainesville’s labor force was at an all-time high in the month of January.

"Even though we continue to see Georgia's workforce be successfully employed in record-breaking numbers, there is still much more work to do as we continue to see hundreds of thousands of jobs needed to be filled," said Commissioner Mark Butler.

The labor force increased in Gainesville by 151 and ended the month with an all-time high of 106,691. That number is up 2,540 when compared to January of 2021.

Gainesville finished the month with 104,127 employed residents. That number decreased by 124 over the month and is up by 3,434 when compared to the same time a year ago.

Gainesville ended January with 96,900 jobs. That number decreased by 1,300 from December to January and increased by 4,100 when compared to this time last year.

The number of unemployment claims increased by 29 percent in Gainesville in January. When compared to last January, claims were down by about 85 percent.
