September Unemployment Rate Drops in Gainesville

Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson said Thursday that Gainesville recorded an unemployment rate of 2.6 percent in September, down five-tenths of a percent over the month. A year ago, the rate was 2.2 percent.
 
 "Georgia reigns as the ultimate destination for business and economic opportunity," said Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson. "However, with recent workforce reductions at Geico, Yellow Freight, and other companies throughout the state, we need to be cognizant of the financial pressures creating some instability within our existing business community. In today's ever-shifting global market, we must remain vigilant and lead with innovation."

The labor force increased in Gainesville by 932 and ended the month with 110,355, an all-time high. That number went up by 2,771 when compared to September of 2022.

Gainesville finished the month with 107,501 employed residents, an all-time high. That number increased by 1,467 over-the-month and rose by 2,285 when compared to the same time a year ago.

Gainesville ended September with 104,700 jobs, an all-time high. That number increased by 800 from August to September and rose by 2,400 when compared to this time last year.

In September, initial unemployment claims decreased by 19 (-7%) in Gainesville. When you compare September 2023 claims to September 2022, claims were up by 4 (2%).
