In April 2024, the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) awarded contracts for a total of 8 projects covering reconstruction, resurfacing, safety improvements, bridge construction, and bridge rehabilitation.
The largest investment, totaling approximately $37 million, widen and reconstruct 1.354 miles of SR 20 from Peachtree Industrial Boulevard (CR 1954) to SR 13 in Gwinnett County. This project also includes the construction of a bridge and approaches over Norfolk Southern Railway and Railroad Avenue.
Of the total awarded projects, approximately $16.8 million is designated for bridge construction projects. The largest bridge construction contract valued at $13.8 million will construct a 0.3 mile bridge and approaches on US 78/SR 10 over North Oconee River and over Trial Creek in Clarke County. The second largest bridge construction project, valued at approximately $1.6 million, will construct a 0.12 mile bridge and approaches on Sandy Valley Road (CR 116) over Duhart Creek in Jefferson County.
Ten percent of the awarded funds, totaling approximately $6.9 million, were allocated to two safety projects. One of these projects involves slope repair on US 441/SR 29 in Wilkinson County, and the other will construct Phase 1 of the multi-use Vidalia Rail Trail in Toombs County.
A single bridge rehabilitation project, valued at $4.9 million or 8% of the awarded funds, focuses on the rehabilitation of bridges at six locations on I-59/SR 406 in Dade County.
The remaining awarded funds, totaling approximately $422,000, were allocated to one resurfacing project. Work will include 1.226 miles of milling, plant mix resurfacing, and shoulder rehabilitation on SR 61 from the Carroll County line to the Paulding County line in Douglas County.
The April awards bring the total construction contracts for Fiscal Year 2024 to $1.93 billion. This total includes TIA, Design-Bid-Build, and locally administered projects. Fiscal Year 2024 began July 1, 2023.
