The Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday that the one-county Gainesville Metropolitan Statistical Area recorded an unemployment rate of 2.7% in July, down three-tenths of a percentage point over the month. A year ago, the rate was 3.0%.

“July brought a clear victory for Georgia: Unemployment fell in every single metro area and region,” said Labor Commissioner Bárbara Rivera Holmes. “When state leaders, local communities and Main Street businesses row in the same direction, results follow. We aren’t slowing down – our focus remains on putting Georgians to work, growing paychecks and building real opportunity in every corner of the state.”

The labor force in Gainesville decreased by 863 over the past month and increased by 636 over the year, reaching 110,642.

Gainesville finished the month with 107,667 employed residents. That number decreased by 484 over the month and increased by 917 from the same time a year ago.

Gainesville ended July with 107,800 jobs. That number decreased by 1,500 from the previous month and by 900 from the same time last year.

In July, initial unemployment claims decreased by 43 from the previous month and 27 from the same month a year ago, totaling 401.
